What Parents and Students Ask Most About GCSE Retakes
Yes— if you retake GCSE and get a higher grade, you can progress well to A Levels, college, or your chosen career.
GCSE Maths and English resits are available every November. Other subjects can be retaken in May and June.
You can resit at your current school or college, or register with a private exam centre. Many students also choose online GCSE retake courses and sit their exams at an approved centre.
If you’re under 19 and resitting GCSEs at school or college, it is free for English and Maths. Private candidates typically pay £100–£200 per subject.
There’s no age limit – you can resit your GCSEs at any stage to improve your qualifications.
Skipping your GCSE resit—especially in Maths or English—can limit access to college courses, apprenticeships, and jobs.
- Set up a quiet, focused study space.
- Stick to a structured GCSE revision timetable.
Practise using past papers, online mock tests, and topic quizzes to track progress.
If you failed GCSE resit exams, you can try again in the next exam session.
The GCSE November resit results are announced in January, and the May/June retakes in August.
